Digital Printing on Knitted Fabric: Mattress Design Trends

Just a few years ago, mattress design was defined almost entirely by jacquard weaving: the pattern was "built into" the fabric structure, and the palette was limited to a handful of yarn colours. Digital printing on knitted fabric has changed the rules. Today you can transfer photographic images, smooth gradients and intricate ornaments onto mattress fabric — and launch a collection that stands out both in the showroom and on online marketplaces. Let's look at how the technology works, how it benefits manufacturers and which design directions are in demand right now.

What digital printing on mattress knit fabric is

The design is applied to finished knitted fabric using industrial inkjet printers. For fabrics with a high polyester content, sublimation is the most common method: under heat, the dye migrates into the fibre and is fixed inside it rather than sitting on the surface as a film. As a result, the image does not crack or flake, and the fabric keeps its softness.

The base is stretchy mattress knit fabric, which is usually quilted together with filling afterwards. For example, the Digital section features fabrics of different weights — from lightweight to dense — in cotton/polyester blends or 100% polyester, with a roll width of 220 cm.

Benefits for mattress manufacturers

  • Unlimited palette. Gradients, halftones and photorealistic textures — things that yarn interlacing simply cannot achieve.
  • Faster collection updates. A new design does not require re-setting weaving equipment, so the range can be refreshed more often.
  • Striking visuals. A vivid print looks great in product photos and advertising — essential for online sales.
  • Range segmentation. The same mattress construction in different prints lets you release several models for different audiences: kids, young adults, classic buyers.
  • Softness of knit. The buyer gets a stretchy, pleasant-to-touch surface that works well with foam and spring constructions.

Design trends: what buyers choose now

Geometry

Clean lines, diamonds, honeycombs, waves and optical patterns. Geometric designs look contemporary, pair with any quilting pattern and suit urban interiors. See the Geometry section.

Botanical motifs

Leaves, branches and flowers in calm natural tones — the theme of naturalness, rest and "eco sleep". Soft greens, sand and powder shades are especially popular. Browse the Botanical pattern collection.

Ethnic and folk-craft designs

Ornaments inspired by traditional embroidery, carpets and decorative painting. For the markets of Kazakhstan and Central Asia, such patterns make a product recognisable and close to the buyer. See the Folk crafts selection.

Calm minimalist palette

White, milky and light-grey fabrics with a barely visible tone-on-tone pattern remain the foundation for the hotel segment and premium models, where a "clean" look matters.

Digital print or jacquard pattern

Both approaches have their place in a product range:

  • Jacquard — the pattern is part of the weave, the fabric is dense and hard-wearing, and the texture can be felt by hand. Great for classic and premium models.
  • Digitally printed knit — maximum freedom in colour and design, softness and stretch, and fast launch of new collections.

Practical tips for choosing printed knit fabric

  1. Evaluate colour reproduction on a physical sample, not just on screen: shades on a monitor and on fabric may differ.
  2. Check the repeat — how the pattern repeats across the roll width and length, and how it will sit on a panel of your size.
  3. Consider the quilting. Fine quilting "breaks up" a large print, while a bold quilting pattern can clash with a detailed image.
  4. Match weight to purpose. A dense fabric suits the top comfort layer; lighter fabric suits budget models and covers.
  5. Check colour fastness to rubbing and light on the sample, especially for bright colours.
  6. Plan the whole collection: choose border fabric and binding tape to match the print.

How to bring digital design into your range

A practical strategy is to keep a proven mattress construction unchanged and switch only its "outfit" — the knit fabric with a new print. This lets a manufacturer test demand quickly without investing in new model development.

Another approach is to build a capsule collection of three or four prints in one direction — for example, geometric designs in different colours — and offer it to dealers as a single series. For hotels and private label projects, you can choose a calm print in the client's corporate colours: an affordable way to make a mattress recognisable without changing its construction.

Digital printing turns a mattress from a "white box" into a product with character. Geometry, botanical motifs and ethnic ornaments help you speak to buyers in their own language — and the softness of knit confirms the impression at first touch.
